If you never use your card (i.e. put in phone and send text, make a call or add data pack), your credit never expires. This means you could buy a card a year ahead of time.

Unused € credit on SIM cards that have been used does not expire. However, there is a requirement you continue using the card (sending a call, text or using data each month).

If the card is unused for 30 days (either for calls, text or data), after 30 days of inactivity, your card will be debited €0.90 per month until it is used again. So, if you have €10 of credit left after your trip, and do not use your card for 12 months, your card would be debited €9.00 (2 months of grace period and 10 months x €0.90/month). Read more here.

Data packs do expire in line with their validity period (7, 14, 30 days).
